RACCONTO DI NATALE: COME NON ESSERE SCROOGE
«Mi chiedo se per caso hai letto i Racconti di Natale di Dickens. […] Io ne ho letti due, e ho pianto come un bambino, ho fatto uno sforzo incredibile per smettere. Sono meravigliosi, e mi sento così bene dopo averli letti. […]. Oh, come è bello che un uomo abbia potuto scrivere libri come questi riempiendo di compassione il cuore delle persone!».
Robert Louis Stevenson, che di materia romanzesca se ne intendeva, aveva solo parole d’elogio nei confronti di Charles Dickens (1812-1870), da molti considerato il maggior narratore inglese del XIX secolo. Non solo perché fu autore di pietre miliari come Oliver Twist (1837), David Copperfield (1849), Little Dorrit (1855) e ovviamente A Christmas Carol (1843), ma anche perché ognuno di questi testi, in maniere differenti, ha costituito uno strumento di critica e analisi della società vittoriana.
Charles Dickens nacque nel 1812 a Portsmouth, città portuale sulla costa meridionale inglese: dopo una breve parentesi nel Kent, nel 1823 la sua famiglia si trasferisce in un sobborgo di Londra, e un anno dopo, nel 1824, il padre finisce in prigione per debiti. All’età di soli dodici anni, il giovane Charles è costretto a lavorare in una fabbrica di lucido per scarpe, e non è difficile immaginare l’influenza di quest’esperienza sulla successiva produzione letteraria.
Qualche anno più tardi, tuttavia, la sua carriera prende una piega totalmente diversa: viene assunto in uno studio legale, impara autonomamente a stenografare e diventa giornalista. Quest’ultima attività lo porta a svolgere inchieste nei quartieri più malfamati della capitale, e a conoscere aspetti dell’epoca vittoriana che saprà narrare criticamente, con una penna non di rado affilata.
Dickens fu un romanziere moderno, che scelse di pubblicare le sue opere a episodi, sui giornali, consapevole che in tale maniera avrebbe avvicinato alla lettura anche le classi meno abbienti.
A Christmas Carol (1843) è una delle storie più emblematiche da lui date alle stampe. Basata su un modello narrativo ampiamente imitato (le apparizioni spettrali che scandiscono il tempo della storia), è una novella che reinterpreta l’attesa del Natale come occasione di redenzione. Il protagonista, un uomo d’affari inesorabilmente e miseramente attaccato al guadagno, è talmente paradigmatico che il suo nome, Scrooge, è entrato a far parte del lessico anglofono, per identificare, ancora oggi, una persona particolarmente avida. Figlio de L’avaro (1668) di Molière e padre putativo, nel 1947, di Paperon de’ Paperoni, Scrooge ha a disposizione una notte per lasciarsi guidare in un viaggio immaginifico che valica spazio, tempo e valori umani. Un itinerario dal sapore dantesco, che negli anni ha visto numerosissime rivisitazioni tra cinema, teatro, TV e fumetti. La prossima?
