QUANDO OGNI SCHERZO VALE – BREVE STORIA DEL CARNEVALE
Già un anno fa, in occasione del laboratorio museale Su la maschera!, il Carnevale era divenuto protagonista del Blog. Tuttavia, ci eravamo scordati di tratteggiare la lunga storia di questa tradizione: lo facciamo oggi!
Il nome ‘carnevale’ deriva probabilmente dal latino carnes levare, ‘togliere la carne’, in riferimento al banchetto che in passato precedeva il martedì grasso. Tale festività anticipa infatti la Quaresima (i quaranta giorni pre-Pasqua), e si configura come un momento di festa prima dell’austerità pasquale.
L’evento sembra ad ogni modo avere origini precristiane: nell’antica Roma i Saturnali, ovvero le cerimonie devote a Saturno, avevano lo scopo di salutare l’inverno e accogliere la fertilità agricola primaverile. Per incontrare il favore del dio venivano organizzati balli, canti e feste durante le quali decadevano differenze sociali e di classe. L’uso di maschere e travestimenti azzerava le distinzioni tra patrizi e plebei, e chiunque poteva concorrere al trono di ‘Rex Saturnaliorum’, sovrano indiscusso del periodo.
Anche il Medioevo è segnato da celebrazioni analoghe (come il fantoccio bruciato in maniera scaramantica a inizio anno), almeno prima delle riforme ecclesiastiche che riportano l’attenzione su penitenza e digiuno.
La morale cristiana non impedisce al Carnevale di radicarsi come festività riconosciuta, specie a partire dal Rinascimento. Nella Firenze medicea, tra il XV e il XVI secolo, fanno capolino fastose sfilate di carri, accompagnate da cori ‘carnascialeschi’ che lodano i piaceri della carne. A Venezia, invece, il primo documento legato a un carnevale locale e pubblico è del 1296, e in esso è già promossa l’abitudine di camuffare la propria identità. La ‘Serenissima’ costruisce nei secoli sede di una festa amatissima, con parate di barche, personaggi (vedi Colombina, serva civettuola) e dolci tipici.
E per quanto le tradizioni italiane attirino turisti da tutto il mondo, forse non reggono il confronto con il Carnevale di Rio de Janeiro, in Brasile, che dal XX secolo si configura come uno degli eventi più imponenti su scala globale. Si racconta che gli schiavi afrodiscendenti importati in Sudamerica dal Portogallo ballassero la samba per mitigare le proprie condizioni di vita. Dopo l’abolizione della schiavitù, molti di essi si trasferirono in zone come Praça Onze e Cidade Nova, iniziando a lavorare come ballerini, compositori e musicisti. Organizzati in scuole, si sfidavano in competizioni a suon di musica, e nel 1932 una di esse si trasforma nel primo Carnevale cittadino: un party gigantesco della durata di una settimana che attrae annualmente decine di migliaia di appassionati e che dal 1984 è ospitato in un grande edificio progettato dall’archistar Oscar Niemeyer.
Non sappiamo ancora dirvi se il carnevale di Fondazione FILA Museum sarà imponente come quello di Rio: di certo non vediamo l’ora di intrattenere i nostri più giovani visitatori con uno speciale programma fatto di musica, laboratori creativi e golose sorprese.
