Welcome back to Portraits<\/strong>, the series that revisits the stars who have defined FILA\u2019s journey. Alberto Tomba<\/strong> was far more than a skiing champion: he reignited Italy\u2019s passion for winter sports<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Born in San Lazzaro (Bologna, 19 December 1966)<\/strong>, Tomba came from a region far removed from the mountains. This unusual background led former skier and commentator Bruno Gattai<\/strong> to describe him as a \u201cUFO that landed on the planet of skiing\u201d<\/strong>. Yet from 1986 to 1998, Tomba became a dominant force<\/strong> in giant slalom and slalom<\/strong>, establishing himself as the undisputed specialist in technical disciplines<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Trained under Roberto Siorpaes<\/strong>, the young Tomba honed his craft on the slopes of Cortina and the Marmolada (Dolomites)<\/strong>. Over time, he developed a style that combined sheer strength with refined technique<\/strong>, punctuated by dramatic breakaways and comebacks. The International Ski and Snowboard Federation hailed him as \u201cthe greatest skier of all time\u201d<\/strong>. Even the legendary Ingemar Stenmark<\/strong> praised him: \u201cAlberto revolutionised technique \u2013 he is a milestone in skiing.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tomba\u2019s career haul is remarkable: fifty World Cup victories<\/strong>, placing him third in the all-time rankings<\/strong> behind Stenmark and Hermann Maier. He won the Overall Cup in 1995<\/strong> and eight Speciality Cups<\/strong>. He was also the first athlete to achieve two gold medals in the same alpine skiing discipline at consecutive Games (Calgary 1988, Albertville 1992)<\/strong>. His achievements include Olympic gold in special slalom (Calgary 1988)<\/strong> and double gold in giant slalom and special slalom at the 1996 World Championships in Sierra Nevada<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In the 1990s, FILA became the official sponsor of FISI<\/strong>, and Tomba emerged as the face of a golden age of Italian skiing<\/strong>, alongside Deborah Compagnoni, Manuela Di Centa and Stefania Belmondo<\/strong>. FILA, already pioneering the use of GORE-TEX\u00ae<\/strong> in ski equipment, designed uniforms with Carbon Kevlar<\/strong>, innovative fibres that acted as armour. Tomba memorably wore the iconic orange suit in 1994<\/strong>. When FILA returned as Federation sponsor in 2004, Tomba had already paved the way for a new generation of promising skiers<\/strong>, known collectively as the \u201cRed Avalanche\u201d<\/strong> for their striking uniforms.<\/p>\n

Over time, Tomba earned the nickname La Bomba (\u201cthe bomb\u201d)<\/strong>, capturing both his explosive energy<\/strong> and the affection of fans<\/strong>. His popularity was so high that during the 1988 Winter Olympics<\/strong>, the Sanremo Music Festival interrupted its live broadcast<\/strong> to show his decisive second run.<\/p>\n

After retiring in 1998 (Nagano Games)<\/strong>, Tomba reinvented himself as an actor<\/strong> (Alex l\u2019ariete<\/em>, 2000), television commentator<\/strong> and even sommelier<\/strong>. His story is told in the autobiography Prima e seconda manche<\/em> (2008)<\/strong> and in the documentary Vincere in salita<\/em> (2023)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
